Certificate in Outdoor Recreation
The original Outdoor Recreation programme. We are dedicated to helping you gain the skills necessary to be active in multiple outdoor pursuits.
60% of the programme is practical skills training in the outdoors. This training will enable you to become a safe and competent practitioner in the sea, rivers, bush, and on rock and mountains.
This is an opportunity to work and learn alongside other talented and motivated people of whom many will become lifelong friends. The programme promotes group awareness and cohesion, along with many other attributes that are essential for living with others in the outdoors. You will find that there will be many situations where you will not only be depended upon, but will also rely on others.
Core Elements Include
Outdoor pursuits include:
- Tramping
- Rock climbing
- Mountaineering
- Rafting
- Whitewater kayaking
- Sea kayaking
- River crossing
- Navigation
- Survival
While the programme emphasis is on practical skills training in the outdoors, theory courses will also develop your knowledge, and support the practical skills you gain.
Theory courses include:
- Risk management
- Meteorology
- Navigation
- Environmental science
- Computing
- Communication skills
- First Aid
- Pursuit theory
- Catering
- Trip planning
- Exercise science
Career Opportunities
The technical pursuit, personal and social development skills will be of value to any career. Further study on Advanced Certificate in Leadership and Guiding or Ski Patrol will lead to career opportunities in the outdoors.
Entry Requirements
Have an appropriate level of physical fitness and able to swim
Have own basic tramping equipment
Hold a current First Aid Certificate
Have attended at minimum of four years secondary school and successfully completed NCEA Level One (or equivalent) inclusive of Science Standards.
Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.
Selection Criteria apply. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.
Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Adult learners (without the academic qualification listed above) who can show experience in the industry will be considered. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.
